So you might've noticed an empty frame on my wall a few posts ago. Well, the project is finished and I thought I'd share with ya'll how I did it. It's so easy a caveman can do it. F'realz.
What you need:
-Frame (with glass)
-spray paint
-chalkboard paint
-roller or brush
That's it! I know, right?
When I first started this project I thought I was going to have to find a place who could cut a sheet of steel in my exact dimensions, buy self-etching primer to coat first, and then finally paint it. But I couldn't find those and ended up just getting my chalkboard paint first- and then realized you can use it on glass! I was a little hesitant to do it that way because I didn't want to worry about it breaking during all our moves; but I just kept the backing for it and so it's no more fragile than any other frame I have.
I started the project with this: (The hideousness of that picture/frame will haunt my dreams forever.)
I took the glass and backing out and spray painted it with a few coats of my desired color. Meanwhile I painted my glass. You want to be careful not to paint the chalkboard paint over several times in a single coating. It makes the paint less effective. Also, stir well before you start painting!
I used a brush and a sponge brush with mine. Although I do like the texture it gave, I think next time I'll use a roller brush. My paint, like I said, has texture to it; so when I write on it, it shows. Like I said, I don't mind- but a roller will give you a smoother finish and make the final product look more like the flat chalkboards you find in stores. My frame didn't have an option to hang in the direction I wanted so I added a hook-thingy to the back. Also a cinch.
The hardest part of the whole process was having to WAIT THREE DAYS to write on my chalkboard. You need to give the paint time to set. When I thought it had been three full days I checked my pictures metadata and realized it had only been 1 1/2. Haha! Impatient much? I put up a note to remind family (k, me) not to write on it.
After three days go by, you want to prep your chalkboard by covering it with chalk. Draw all over it with our chalk sideways. You need to do that a couple times, then erase, otherwise what you "write" first will be there FOR-EV-ERRR.
And that's it! I LOVE my new chalkboard. I've been really wanting to add more colors to my home decor so I'm happy with it!
Wish me a happy flight today! I'm so excited for our little trip (:

Sadly, I will never be someone who can ever write on a chalkboard. Too bad dry erase boards aren't as cute!
